The Ministry for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) commends SALGA for hosting yet another successful National Conference. “We also congratulate SALGA for reaching an important milestone – 20th year of its existence. We acknowledge all those who played a role (past and present) for so ably steering the ship of local government, through sometimes turbulent waters, over the past two decades”, said Minister van Rooyen.
The role played by SALGA in the last 16 years of the democratic local government is also another important milestone which will go a long way to ensure a well-functioning local government sector that is able to deliver to the people.
As CoGTA we also congratulate the elected National Office Bearers and the National Executive Committee which will preside and lead SALGA going forward. As we welcome the new team at the helm of SALGA, we also acknowledge the outgoing team for the sterling job they performed since 2011. “You contribution and selfless contribution will not go unnoticed, it is greatly valued”, said Minister.
We wish the new leadership of SALGA well under the stewardship of the newly elected President – Mr Parks Tau. His election to lead SALGA follows the nod he received earlier this year (2016) to lead UCLG.
As CoGTA we pledge our continued support to ensuring that we build a thriving local government system that is able to deliver as expected. “The next five years of this sector is crucial and organised local government will be required to play a more central role to achieve the goals we set ourselves within the National Development Plan (NDP), whilst also building a developmental State”, said Minister van Rooyen.
