Urban and rural areas are connected through flows of people, and natural and economic resources. The economic, social and environmental interdependence between rural and urban areas is widely acknowledged.
However, the simplistic concept of a rural–urban ‘divide’ persists, even though it does not reflect the reality of rural-urban interdependency.
Traditionally, development policy used ‘rural’ to refer to more remote farming areas and ‘urban’ to refer to cities and towns.
