Deputy Minister Andries Nel at the High Level International Forum on Sustainable Urban Development

The Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, (CoGTA), honourable Andries Nel will be in China from 18 – 23 July 2017. The first part of the Deputy Minister’s programme will begin in Beijing, from 18 to 19 July 2017. This programme will include broader consultations meetings, bilateral meeting with Mr NI Hong, Vice Minister, Ministry of Housing and Urban Rural Development, People’s Republic of China, follow-up meeting with Dr Chang Liu, Associate Professor of: China Academy of Urban Planning and Design, visit to the China Academy of Urban Planning and Design and the city study tour.

The second part of the Deputy Minister’s programme will be the High Level International Forum on Sustainable Urban Development to be held in Chengdu, China from 20 to 23 July 2017. The High Level International Forum will be held under the theme of “liveable and Sustainable Development”. This Forum will gather high-level policy makers, urban managers, scholars and experts, company leaders and media elites at home and abroad. The forum will discuss how to address problems in urban development and serve as a high-level platform for the connectivity of world cities.

This conference is part of the New Urban Agenda (Habitat III) which is the product of intensive negotiations between member states of the United Nations, including South Africa, held over five separate sessions, since 2014. Habitat III was the most important global UN meeting on human settlements and urban development in 20 years. The New Urban Agenda identifies strategies that translate the commitments into concrete actions to bring adequate solutions to the vast urban and human settlements challenges.

These engagements will go a long way in assisting to chart the way forward for sustainable development in line with the New Urban Agenda.
