The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Mr Des van Rooyen will visit the Bokone Bophirima Province on 03 November 2017 to hold discussion and engage municipalities, especially those identified as requiring assistance.
This engagement is part of the Back to Basics (B2B) approach which calls for working sessions to be held with Municipalities and provincial departments to ensure their effective and efficient functioning.
The democratic local government has over the years registered many important milestones which speak to its successes thus far, but there are perennial challenges that persist and making it difficult for the Municipalities to deliver as expected. Some of this Municipalities with perennial persisting challenges were identified by the Auditor General and the Back to Basics (B2B) assessments.
To this effect, the purpose of Minister’s visit is to assess the state and performance of priority municipalities and to agree on an intervention plan where required to assist them to deliver as expected. In terms of B2B, this priority municipalities are to be provided with a focused support.
Guided by the National Development Plan (NDP) which places Municipalities at the centre of the success of a democratic government, it is important to ensure that they remain functional and effective.
The Municipalities will be given an opportunity to provide an overview of their challenges and then discussions will ensue in an effort to find lasting solutions and turning them around.
The good work done by these Municipalities will also be appreciated and encouraged for better and improved service delivery.
