The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Mr Des van Rooyen joined delegates from across the world attending the Commonwealth Local Government Conference 2017 under the theme – “Fit for the future: resources and capacity for effective local government”.
The Commonwealth Local Government Conference is CLGF’s flagship event, held every two years in different regions of the Commonwealth. In 2017 the CLGF conference will be held for the first time in Malta from 21 – 24 November 2017.
The conference brings together local government policy makers, practitioners and other key stakeholders – including heads of government, ministers, mayors and council leaders, senior officials, and partners from development agencies, academia, civil society and the finance and corporate sector.
Delegates will learn about and discuss policy developments, share and learn about innovative practice and solutions to help policy makers and practitioners to improve their processes and services in their own areas.
On Thursday, Minister van Rooyen will participate and deliver a message in plenary 4 debate looking at innovations in financing to support sustainable development. The discussions will explore innovations in financing and supporting local development, through partnerships with civil society, other spheres of government and access to national/global development funds, the private sector and social enterprise
