Minister Van Rooyen Mourns the passing of Mme Joyce Bakgethiwa Bapela

Minister van Rooyen has learned with shock and sadness of the passing of a giant of the struggle for our liberation, an indomitable freedom fighter and a mother, Mrs Joyce Bakgethiwa Bapela who passed on at the age of 83. Mme Bapela is the mother of Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Mr Obed Bapela.

“We are honoured and blessed to have known Mme Bapela who sacrificed her life during the long struggle for freedom and democracy that her and others of her generation fought hard to realise. She survived torture and harassment by the apartheid police in the 1980s. Her sons joined the African National Congress (ANC) and the late Titus “aka Lerumo Nkadimeng” Bapela was a member of Mkhonto we Sizwe. With a heavy heart, we pray for the eternal repose of one who was a woman of distinguished humanity”, said Minister van Rooyen.

The funeral service of Mme Joyce Bakgethiwa Bapela will be held as follows:

Date:              January 17, Wednesday.

Venue:           East Bank Hall, in East Bank – Alexandra;

Time:             9h00 – 11h00 (Cortege departing to the Midrand Cemetery).

May our good Lord comfort and strengthen the Bapela family and grant our mother eternal rest and peace.
