The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Dr Zweli Mkhize, will undertake an oversight visit in support of interventions in distressed and dysfunctional municipalities in Gauteng Province as part of his ongoing national programme.
The visit will focus on support to distressed and dysfunctional municipalities in Gauteng. Four municipalities have been identified as being dysfunctional and in distress in Gauteng, with challenges ranging from governance and administration, financial sustainability, poor infrastructure and the general decline in service delivery.
These are the following;
– Lesedi Local Municipality
– Merafong City Local Municipality
– Rand West City Local Municipality
– Emfuleni Local Municipality
Emanating from these engagements, an intervention programme will be implemented.
The Minister will meet the provincial leadership Gauteng MEC Mr Uhuru Moiloa of CoGTA and MEC Ms Barbara Creecy of Finance as well as Mayors, Speakers and Chief Whips of the distressed and dysfunctional municipalities in Gauteng.
The Minister will be joined by the Deputy Ministers of CoGTA, Mr Obed Bapela and Mr Andries Nel and Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation Ms Pamela Tshwete.
The meeting will assess the challenges and come up with interventions that will ensure affected municipalities are able to deliver on their mandate.
One of the key initiatives is the deployment of national support teams which will assist municipalities with planning, development and maintenance of infrastructure which leads to sewer spillages, water leaks, bad roads and general bad service delivery.
The programme of the Ministerial visit will include meetings with the business community as well as a site visit to the areas affected by sewer spillage in Emfuleni Local Municipality.
