The IUDF is a policy initiative of the Government of South Africa, coordinated by the Departments Of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA). The IUDF seeks to foster a shared understanding across government and society about how best to manage urbanisation and achieve the goals of economic development, job creation and improved living conditions for our people.
COGTA’s vision is to build a functional and developmental local government system that delivers on its Constitutional and legislative mandates within a system of cooperative governance.
The IUDF underwent extensive consultation process in the past three years. Out of this process an urban vision of creating “liveable, safe, resource-efficient cities and towns that are socially integrated, economically inclusive and globally competitive, where residents actively participate in urban life” was developed. As well as, alignment of people’s jobs, livelihoods and services promises an urban dividend that can reset the country’s social and economic growth trajectory.
This policy will also deal with challenges of transformation from apartheid spatial planning and the increased continuing urbanisation in the country.
