Urbanisation, Rural Development Round Table discussion

Deputy Minister for Cooperative Governance & Traditional Affairs, Andries Nel participated in the Human Settlements Urbanisation and Rural Development Round Table discussion in Kirstenbosch, Cape Town.

The roundtable, themed: “Partnerships and Areas Collaboration for Future Growth and Management of Urban-Rural Continuum” was aimed at engaging and activating South Africa’s urban agenda directed at making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable as agreed in the United Nations Agenda 2030, Sustainable Development Goal 11.

According to Statistics South Africa, the country is urbanising rapidly with over 64% of South Africans living in the country’s urban centres. Addressing the current high urbanisation rate, Deputy Minister Nel said:  “At present, South Africa is experiencing rapid urbanisation while also still battling with challenges of Apartheid spatial planning, therefore we adopted the Integrated Urban Development Framework based on the objectives of the National Development Plan.”
