Pretoria, 10 March 2011 - In terms of section 24(2) of the Local Government: Structures Act, 1998 (Act No.117 of 1998) the Acting Minister Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, after consulting the Independent Electoral Commission, must, by Notice in the Government Gazette, call and set a date for an election of all municipal councils. On 3 March 2011 it was announced that the elections will be held on 18 May 2011, and it was confirmed by publication of that date in the Government Gazette on 10 March 2011. This effectively means that voter’s roll is now closed, and only those persons that were registered on the voter’s roll as at 17h00, on 10 March 2011 will be eligible to vote.
