The Deputy Minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Yunus Carrim, in partnership with the Global Facility for Disaster Risk and Recovery, hosted a panel discussion at COP 17/CMP7 in the Local Government Pavilion in Durban relating to Disaster Risk Financing and Insurance. The Disaster Risk Financing and Insurance Panel Discussion examined opportunities for risk financing and insurance to promote climate change adaptation in developing countries through the provision of risk information. Panelists from across the world were invited to present groundbreaking and innovative methods in which insurance financing could be leveraged to create more resilient communities.
The panelists were Mr Saroj K. Jha, Program Manager: Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR), World Bank, David Waskow - Climate Change Program Manager, Oxfam America, Dr Munenobu Ikegami of the International Livestock Research Institute, Ms Debbie Donaldson, General Manager: South African Insurance Association, Mr Menashe GerMichael of the HARITA Insurance Finance Project in Kenya and Deputy Minister Carrim.
