On Friday March 27, 2009, the Department for Provincial and Local Government launched an ambitious multi-phased integrated developmental project which will bring various spheres of government together at the Ingquza Hill Local Municipality in Flagstaff, in the Eastern Cape.
The event marked the launch of the initiative, the Pondoland Revival Project, which is aimed at bringing an integrated development package to the Pondoland region of the Eastern Cape by maximizing on the abundant social, natural and rich heritage potential of the area. The objective of the initiative is to co-ordinate government’s developmental packages from various departments and working with the community to facilitate their delivery and implementation. Minister for Provincial and Local Government, Sicelo Shiceka, is championing the initiative in partnership with the Ingquza Local Municipality and key local stakeholders to bring social and economic development to this part of the country, which has some of the highest levels of poverty and deprivation alongside the most scenic natural beauty and a rich cultural heritage. One of the first key projects to anchor this initiative is a R20-million Electrification Project which is the brainchild of the Department of Minerals and Energy. A sod-turning ceremony with the Executive Mayor of Ingquza Hill Local Municipality took place on Friday.
