Minister Shiceka’s community consultative process gets underway in Khutsong

ImagePretoria, 28 November 2008 – Minister for Provincial and Local Government, Sicelo Shiceka, will on Monday December 1st brief the people of Merafong on the consultative process that government has initiated with affected communities in the cross-boundary towns, in a bid to find lasting solutions to the problems that have beset these areas due to the communities’ rejection of government’s boundary de-determination decision of 2006.

A committee comprised of government officials and stakeholders from the affected communities will be established in the affected communities to facilitate their construction, reconciliation and restoration. Senior officials from the Minister’s office, DPLG, Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, Treasury, Local Government and community representatives will be included in the Committees.

“The committee in each of these communities will ensure that affected communities are involved in the due processes that will shape their future and also ensure collective ownership and buy-in of the outcome,” says Minister Shiceka.

In addition, following the public participation process which has started in Merafong, the Committees will oversee the re-incorporation of the areas into the Province / Municipality the communities prefer, with a mandate to specifically address:

  • Developing an interim governance arrangement in the affected areas (where structures have been weakened)
  • Assessing the impact of the current situation on service delivery and propose remedial measures.
  • Facilitating reconciliation and restoration of peace in the affected communities; and
  • Continuously briefing communities on legislative processes related to the re-incorporation.
