The Vuna Awards which are the municipal awards that recognise exemplary service delivery were held at Emperor's Palace on 10 December 2008. Under the National Sector Department and Provinces Award, there were two categories, firstly, the winner of the National Sector department providing exemplary support to Local Government; the winner in this category was the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry. Secondly, under the category for Provincial Government providing exemplary support to Local Government the winner was the Eastern Cape Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs. # Vuna Awards 2008 Winners

The next category was for the best District Municipality and the second runner up under this category was the West Rand District Municipality of the Gauteng Province with the first runner up being Uthungulu District Municipality of the  Kwa-Zulu Natal Province. The Winning District Municipality was the Nkangala District Municipality of the Mpumalanga Province.

Under the category for the Best Metropolitan Municipality the second runner up was the Ekurhuleni Metro of the Gauteng Province and the first runner up was the Nelson Mandela Metro of the Eastern Cape Province with the winner as the City of Johannesburg from the Gauteng Province.

Finally, there was a Special Ministerial Award that went to Councillor Lassy Chiwayo, Mayor of the Mbombela Municipality of the Mpumalanaga Province.
