Minister announces members of Selection Panel for Commission on protection of  Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities 

Pretoria 3 November 2008 - The Minister for Provincial and Local Government, Sicelo Shiceka, has appointed eight eminent South Africans to serve on the selection Panel for the Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities.

The CRL Commission is a statutory body established in terms of the South African Constitution.
 
Members of the Selection Panel are individuals who are highly qualified on issues relating to cultural, religious and linguistic rights, constitutional institutions, and human rights.  They are:
(a)    Dr Mathole Motshekga, specialist in Local and Traditional Governance, African    Philosophy, Culture and Religion.

(b)   Shaik Omar Gabier of the Muslim Judicial Council.

(c)    Father Smangaliso Mkhatshwa, Chairperson of the Moral Regeneration Movement.

(d)    Ms T Mpumlwana, the Deputy Chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission

(e)    Ms Tsakane Nkwe, a UNISA lecturer

(f)  Professor M Sirayi, dean of the Faculty of Arts at the Tshwane University of Technology specialising in cultural policy.

(g)    Ms. N Nkosi, the Chief Executive Officer of the PanSALP

(h)   Adv. Phathekile Holomisa, President of the Congress of Traditional Leaders of South    Africa and Member of Parliament.

The panel will shortlist candidates nominated to the Commission, and submit a list of at least 26 names to the President who will appoint the Chairperson and 17 other members.   

This Commission is the last of the independent constitutional institutions to be established and will play an important role in nation-building.
