The Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Richard Baloyi held a meeting with the Demarcation Board in the afternoon - Thursday, 24 January 2013 - to discuss matters relating to the proposed amalgamation of Metsimaholo and Ngwathe local municipalities, in the wake of the public protest which resulted in the loss of lives and destruction of property in Zamdela.
 
The meeting noted and agreed that the Minister's public announcement to put the demarcation process on hold was in the interest of peace and stability in the area of Metsimaholo.

Minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Richard Baloyi will form part of the dignitaries that will attend the commemoration of Kgoshi Mamopuru II which will be held as follows:

Kgoshi Mampuru was brutally executed in public by the apartheid government after he had refused to acknowledge and thereby submit to the rule of the then Republican Government (TVL Native Affairs Department,). Mampuru was expected to pay a hut tax. He was hanged in 1883 November.

Minister Baloyi to take a new approach in the fight against local government corruption Print E-mail

Minister Richard Baloyi has called for a more heightened fight against corruption in municipalities, starting with the ones perceived corrupt.

The minister says that for the first time CoGTA will collaborate with communities to identify ten municipalities that are perceived to be corrupt in each province and make an example of them to discourage the scourge.The Ministry of CoGTA is already capacitating its Anti-corruption Inspectorate, which was established to focus on local government corruption, for the task.

The Municipal Infrastructure Support Agency (MISA) is offering bursaries to students who are studying towards a National Diploma or Bachelors’ Degree in the Civil and Electrical Engineering disciplines.

The MEC of Local Government and Traditional Affairs Mlibo Qoboshiyane and Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Executive Mayor Zanoxolo Wayile will announce details of a partnership with South African Breweries which has adopted the municipality.

The adoption of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is a direct response to a Business Adopt A Municipality programme which was initiated by the Department of Cooperative Governance to encourage private sector and public enterprises to support municipalities especially in areas where their businesses operate.
