CoGTA Deputy Minister to Attend Municipal Innovative Infrastructure Financing Conference

The Deputy Minister Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Mr Andries Nel will attend the South African Local Government Association Municipal Innovative Infrastructure Financing Conference. The three-day conference is scheduled to take on 13 – 15 June 2018, at the Emperor’s Palace, Kempton Park, Johannesburg.

The Municipal Innovative Infrastructure Financing Conference will bring together municipalities, industry experts and key stakeholders in local government infrastructure financing. The conference aims to ‘Facilitate Shared Learning between Municipalities’ through creating a platform to explore, deliberate and share ideas on innovative infrastructure funding mechanisms for South African municipalities.

Deputy Minister Andries Nel will reiterate that service delivery in the areas of water roads, electricity and other areas relies exclusively on the maintenance of old infrastructure and the building of new infrastructure that is supposed to be addressed through the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG).

“Over the past five years, a total of R3, 4 billion in MIG transfers was stopped and reallocated to better spending municipalities. Considering that only 55 of 257 municipalities have a qualified engineer, these effectively punished municipalities with less capacity and that inevitably have poorer communities”, said Deputy Minister Nel.
