Statement on Allegations of Snubbing SCOPA

The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma noted with concern the media reports alleging that she snubbed SCOPA meetings.

The negative media reports being sponsored by some members of the committee are misleading to the public.

The Minister wants to clarify that she does not chair the IMTT as quoted in the media.

The Minister supports the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts on its mandate as Parliament’s watchdog over the way taxpayers’ money is spent by the executive.

“I am always willing to attend any of the committee meetings as part of the democratic process”, said Minister Dlamini Zuma.

Minister Dlamini Zuma sent a message to the committee (SCOPA) informing them that due to Cabinet which is taking place at the same time, she would be not able to attend the meeting except to introduce the Director General and his team and then return to the cabinet meeting.

It is true that the Minister could not leave cabinet on time to come and introduce the DG, and this was duly communicated to the committee. It is for this reason that the Minister believes that the decision to cancel the meeting was irrational and it deprived the members of the committee of the opportunity to receive a comprehensive briefing from the relevant people.
