Minister Dlamini Zuma to Lead the Commemoration of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction

Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs  (CoGTA), Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma will lead the commemoration of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDR) to be held on 6 December 2019 in the Free State Province.  The 2019 commemoration will be held under the theme, “Substantially reduce disaster damage to critical infrastructure and disruption of basic services, among them health and educational facilities, including through developing their resilience”.
 
The Minister will be joined by the Provincial and Local Governments’ leadership. The invited attendees to the commemoration will include ward committee members, councillors, Mayors, representatives from fire protection associations; NGOs and CBOs.
 
The 2019 commemoration will provide a platform for sector departments and SOEs to present their legislation; policies and plans regarding the continuing of basic services during incidents and disasters. How they manage and plan to manage critical infrastructure will be a key area of focus. The IDDR will also provide a platform for sector departments to make public commitments on advancing and improving their disaster management plans in the next few months. These include advocating for future commitments in building disaster resilient infrastructure and risk proof buildings that ensures business continuity and the continued provision and access to basic services.
