Mbhashe Local Municipality – On Monday, 23 January 2023, CoGTA Deputy Minister Thembi Nkadimeng attended a high-level preliminary session for the upcoming commemoration and launch of the historical liberation battle of Lurhwayizo. The significant yet undocumented battle of Lurhwayizo took place in the southeastern corner of the then Transkei homeland in 1987. The encounter led to a loss of lives, and the whereabouts of some involved individuals remain unknown.  

The battle of Lurhwayizo commemoration is a government-led multisectoral project aimed at pursuing local economic development through the integration of heritage preservation, investment in agriculture, maritime and infrastructure and tourism promotion. 

Also present at the event were Mbhashe LM Executive Mayor Cllr Samkelo Janda, South African Local Government Association (SALGA) President Cllr Bheke Stofile, Department of Rural Development and Land Reform (DALRRD) Deputy Minister Mcebisi Skwatsha; members of the Jafta family who were involved in the battle of Lurhwayizo, local farmers, business and community representatives.
