Minister Nkadimeng Meets With The Municipal Demarcation Board - Calls For Collaborative Task Team On Research And Development

Earlier today, the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Thembi Nkadimeng held a meeting with the Chairperson of the Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) and Senior Officials from the Board led by its Chief Executive Officer. This was a fundamentally important meeting between the Municipal Demarcation Board as an entity of the Department that does crucial work in the local sphere of government.

The Municipal Demarcation Board is an independent authority responsible for the determination of municipal boundaries, through its leadership briefed the Minister on its work and undertakings consistent with its established legislative mandate, and other projects it intends to implement in collaboration with the Department.

The Board, amongst other important issues, briefed the Minister on the status of the 2022-2024 municipal boundary redeterminations and municipal amalgamations which received more than 24 000 submissions

The Municipal Demarcation Board proposed a collaborative partnership with the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs on Research and Development to determine the development of new municipalities especially in new areas where there is a potential proliferation of economic activities.

“We are grateful for the information provided by the Municipal Demarcation Board, particularly the cooperation in the field of Research and Development. We would be grateful if the Board could form a Task Team in conjunction with CoGTA to address these crucial matters. It is important to stress the significance of the independence of the MDB to respect its authority and responsibilities.” said the Minister.

The Minister reiterated the unwavering commitment of the Department to support the Board in executing its functions, noting that this will be done by working in tandem with provinces.
