The Minister of CoGTA, Mr Velenkosini Hlabisa together with Deputy Ministers Prince Zolile Burns Ncamashe and Dr Dickson Masemola, will visit areas affected by the adverse weather phenomenon in the Western Cape on Monday, 15 July 2024. The severe weather events have caused widespread flooding, displacement of communities and considerable infrastructure damage.
The Minister of CoGTA, through the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) is responsible for promoting an integrated and coordinated disaster management system in the country. This empowers the NDMC to coordinate efforts of multiple state organs and social partners to effectively respond to and anticipate disasters.
In keeping with these injunctions, the NDMC has activated the Joint Operation Command Centre, to prioritize seamless and rapid coordination of support focusing on immediate humanitarian assistance undertakings, comprising the distribution of relief materials, temporary relocation of displaced households, evacuations as well as search and rescue missions.
During his assessment visit, Minister Hlabisa will receive a firsthand account of the magnitude and coping capacity of state organs, to determine the classification and declaration in compliance with the legislative prescripts.
