The Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Dr. Namane Dickson Masemola will lead the intergovernmental accountability and monitoring visit to Vhembe District in the Limpopo Province. The Deputy Minister will be accompanied by the MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (COGHSTA) in Limpopo, Mr. Basikopo Rogers Makamu.

The visit is part of the ongoing countrywide visits and engagements with priority districts and metropolitan municipalities under the theme, “Every Municipality Must Work”, in an effort to support and strengthen local government to better deliver on its constitutional mandate.

The strategic engagement in Vhembe aligns with the District Development Model (DDM), a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach to coordinated planning, budgeting, and implementation.constitutional injunction. It is also aligned with Section 54 which mandates that national and provincial governments must support and strengthen the capacity of municipalities. This support is crucial to enable municipalities to manage their own affairs, exercise their powers, and perform their functions effectively.

Guided by the theme: “Every Municipality Must Work”, the engagement is also meant to assist Vhembe and its local municipalities to overcome challenges, unblock barriers and improve their performance in serving communities. If this is achieved, it will in turn, contribute to the overall development of communities.

During the visit, the Deputy Minister and the MEC will interact with local leaders, traditional authorities, and key stakeholders to assess the operational performance of the Vhembe District Municipality and its constituent local municipalities.

Post the meeting, a consolidated report will be produced detailing key areas for attention with key responsibilities attached to those who will be implementing going forward.
