The Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Dr Namane Dickson Masemola, will present at the Mpumalanga Provincial Engagement on the Revised Draft White Paper on Local Government.

This important engagement forms part of a broader national consultative process led by COGTA, aimed at refining and strengthening the Revised Draft White Paper on Local Government. The process seeks to ensure that the policy framework is responsive to the evolving developmental needs of municipalities, improves service delivery, enhances governance systems, and fosters greater accountability and community participation.

The White Paper review comes at an important time for local government in South Africa, as municipalities continue to face challenges related to financial sustainability, infrastructure backlogs, institutional capacity, and service delivery. The engagement will provide a platform for robust dialogue and meaningful inputs from a wide range of stakeholders, including government institutions, organised local government, labour unions, traditional leadership, and academic institutions.

Deputy Minister Masemola’s presentation will focus on the gazetted draft White Paper, outlining its key reforms, policy proposals, and the envisioned future of a capable, ethical, and developmental local government system. His address will also emphasise the importance of cooperative governance, intergovernmental coordination, and inclusive participation in shaping a responsive local government framework.
