MINISTER HLABISA CHAIRS IMC ON LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS

The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Mr Velenkosini Hlabisa, on 10 July 2026, chaired a meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on Preparations for the 2026/27 Local Government Elections at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

The IMC received progress reports from the Electoral Commission (IEC) and the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) on the country’s state of readiness for the upcoming Local Government Elections.

The Committee welcomed the successful first voter registration weekend and noted that the second registration weekend is scheduled to take place on 1 and 2 August 2026. The IMC also received updates on key electoral milestones, voter registration initiatives, communication campaigns, and measures aimed at encouraging greater participation, particularly among young people.

The IMC further considered operational and security preparations for the elections, including efforts to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process, combat disinformation, and ensure a safe environment for voters, election officials and political stakeholders.

The IMC will continue to monitor progress on election preparations and provide strategic oversight as the country advances towards the 2026/27 Local Government Elections.
